Where the Sidewalk Ends

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.
Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we’ll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we’ll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends.

So with a new name, I guess I should explain it.

In general, I suck at naming things. Even papers for school. I hate it. I don’t know why it’s so hard for me to do. Blog O Brain Farts pretty much came out of my ass one day. After a while, I started to dislike the name.

I gave this one a little bit more thought.

Shel Silverstein is someone that had a big impact on my childhood. Even though my elementary school tried to restrict us from checking out his books, I was lucky enough to have older siblings who helped me get into his work.

I distinctly remember ‘Where the Sidewalk Ends’ as one of the first books I read from him. It’s hard to remember how I exactly felt back then, but it was authors like Silverstein that helped cultivate an expansive imagination for not only myself, but many kids from my generation. He helped get you to ask questions, even if they were absurd. These questions helped get me to where I am today, in terms of my political development.

To me, ‘Where the Sidewalk Ends’ represents pushing the boundaries. Always moving, always thinking, always challenging. It’s something that you’ve never seen, but will keep searching for. In a society that tries to confine and bind you to something as absurd as ‘normality’, it’s a reminder to break out of that and always reach for something better. For a young, skinny, pale, awkward little Filipino kid, that was important to remember.

For this blog, that means the randomness of whatever I come across on the internet, I will continue to share with all of you. Even if it’s just myself reading it. I’ll post some funny stuff, some weird stuff, and some very serious stuff. While it’s a culmination of my random personality and interests, it’ll all have meaning. Even if it’s not so initially clear.

At 24, I’m still searching for where the sidewalk ends…even if I’ve lost track of where the sidewalk even is. Maybe this will help me get there.

Open mics inspire creativity. People inspire resistance. Broken hearts inspire bad songs/ poems. Stress induces heart attacks. With that said…

We flippin’ da skript
We be some talented folks
Sharing who we are

Unite for relief
Unnatural disaster
Blame is at your feet

I miss your friendship
Don’t know when I will forgive
Still deep in my thoughts

Feelin’ like failure
A foggy future ahead
Today really sucked

The best part about having a not-so-serious crush is…it’s not serious. Thus, feelings can’t be hurt. Good times. Also a plus is she’s far away. Then you don’t have to see her. That helps it not get serious.

Hella far away
I don’t even know you well
See you in my dreams

Tall for a Pinay
You don’t look Filipino
But neither do I
