On the Poll: Who should play ‘Captain America’ on the big screen?

With the success of the Iron Man movie and hype building up for its sequel, Iron Man 2 (due out in 2010), and the feature-length film, Thor, in development (due out in 2011), Marvel is building steam for its planned feature-length blockbuster, The Avengers. With most of the Avengers crew locked in (no word on the Wasp and Ant-Man, even if they’re going to be in the film, yet), the big question remains: Who will play Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America?

This was a popular topic of conversation within my nerd horde days after Disney purchased Marvel. My sister even started the conversation on her facebook.

I know, Captain America is the posterboy for this pro-America, ultra-nationalistic attitude that makes us anti-US imperialists throw up. But to give him some credit, he hasn’t always agreed with America. Regardless on how you may feel about his imagery and politics, he’s an important fixture in the Marvel Universe.

With that said, who will be awarded with this coveted role?

Thanks to comicbookmovie.com, you can keep up with the latest news on the Captain America movie.

Some of the names thrown out there:

Will Smith as Captain America has been one of the most popular rumors ever since the movie was announced. Though it has been debunked numerous times, it never hurts to revisit it (hell, Brett Favre once said he was done with football). And yes, we all know Will is ‘black’ and Capt is ‘white’ according to the comics. But Marvel was willing to let Samuel L. Jackson play Nick Fury, so why not change it up again?

Matthew McConaughey was an early rumor for the part. But he was shocked that he was supposedly up for it. Mainly because he didn’t even know who Capt was. Now, he’s supposedly warming up to the role. Not sure if it has been completely debunked, but he’s got the build for it.

Channing Tatum has stated that he would love to play Capt. At least he’s a fan. But after seeming him shit on G.I. Joe’s ‘Duke’, I don’t have much confidence in his ability to make our childhood heroes come to life. Besides, he’s not a very good actor. Physically he’s there. His acting ability will clearly be overshadowed by the likes of Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, etc. Marvel can’t do that to one of the main leads.

MMA star, Randy Couture has dabbled in acting. Though he hasn’t been a popular rumor, he’s been in conversation. I mean come on, his nickname is “Captain America”. He looks the part, but I doubt he has the acting chops. Plus he just signed a new deal with UFC, so they have him for the next couple years. Can’t help but wonder though.

Jason Lewis is one of the lesser-knowns rumored to be in the running. He has a thin acting record, but he pretty much looks the part. I personally think Capt should be played by a lesser known actor to help balance out the star power. Plus, I’ll take acting ability over a big name any day.

Jensen Ackles is an up and coming actor who’s made his rounds on a few WB/ CW shows (currently starring in CW’s Supernatural). He seems to be another fan favorite to play Capt. Probably because he’s been to a few Comic-Cons, so he’s earned some respect from the nerds.

Matt Damon has sort of been in the rumors to play Capt., but he was mine and Brandon’s early choice. Mainly because we felt he did a decent job in the Bourne series. He has the name and the acting chops. But he’ll need to add like 20 lbs. of muscle. And apparently he died today? So he may not even be around to take the role.

I could go on and on (and I kinda did)…but here’s just a few names. Who do you think should play Captain America? Please add in your choice if they’re not named already.
